As Spring yields to Summer and the days get longer, Pulborough begins a colourful transformation. Everywhere you look there are pops of colour as verges and hedgerows come alive with flowers and blossom. Bees and butterflies forage while neighbours stop to chat, steady moments that remind us why this village is such a special place to call home.

Hints of the new season appear along the Arun. The river seems livelier, the water shimmering, catching the light differently as sun rises higher in the sky. Paddleboarders and kayakers venture out eager to make the most of warmer days afloat. Over on the Brooks, birds fill the air with sound again — lapwings circling overhead and geese on the wing, the familiar chorus that tells us Summer is near.

For many residents and visitors, Pulborough Brooks and the nearby RSPB reserve become the go to places for long walks and family days out. Wild flowers and tall grasses brighten the wetlands, wading birds, ducks and geese stake their claim on the water, and the whole area comes alive with for birdwatchers and walkers keen for adventure. Each visit offers something new to notice.

Summer brings people outdoors again. Dog walks get longer. Mountain bikers cruise miles of bridleways. The bench on the East Glebefield overlooking the wide expanse of the South Downs hosts photographers eager to capture the perfect sunrise or sunset shot, while during the day, walkers pause here for an impromptu picnic. The allotments buzz with activity as growers compare notes and look forward to harvest time. Local shops, pubs and cafés feel brighter as windows open and displays refresh.

Our historic buildings—St Mary’s Church, the old inns, the timber-framed houses and ancient monuments such as the iconic Stopham Bridge—take on a new warmth at this time of year. Morning sun catches the stone differently and tucked-away gardens are a riot of blooms.
