Future of Music Programme Expands as Youth Engagement Grows Ahead of Summer Term

The Future of Music Programme, run by Bev Capelin of Macklin’s, Pulborough and supported by Pulborough Parish Council, is entering a new phase of momentum this spring, with rising student numbers, strengthened community partnerships, and renewed focus on safeguarding and facilities. As the summer term approaches, the programme is seeing steady growth in young people accessing high‑quality, affordable music education.

Growing Participation in Music Lessons

Following a successful open day, two new students have begun singing lessons, bringing the total number of vocal students to four. One young person is transitioning from singing to guitar, with pairing arrangements now underway to support their progression. Another prospective student has expressed interest in joining regular singing sessions.

Piano tuition is also expanding, with a new student expected to begin lessons in the coming weeks. This continued uptake reflects a healthy and growing demand for accessible music opportunities within the community.

To be able to provide more keyboard lessons to local young people, the programme is in need of a full-size electric piano. If you or anyone you know has one they no longer need, please email bev@macklinandmay.co.uk

Strengthening Local Partnerships

A meeting with St Mary’s School, Pulborough, is scheduled for after Easter to explore outreach opportunities and potential collaborative programmes. This partnership aims to widen access to music education and create new pathways for young people to engage with the arts.

Safeguarding and Compliance Fully Updated

Safeguarding training for the project has now been fully updated and completed. This ensures that all sessions operate within a safe, compliant, and well‑supported environment—an essential foundation as the programme continues to expand.

Live Performance Opportunities on the Horizon

A series of performance events is being lined up to give young musicians valuable real‑world experience and build their confidence:

Broadwater, Worthing – 25 May
ABC Animal Sanctuary – Sundowner Event (date TBC)
Under‑18s Open Mic – restarting this summer

These events will help young performers develop stage skills, increase community visibility, and take meaningful steps in their musical journeys.
