Church Hill Update from Tom Crofts, WSCC

There is understandably a great deal of frustration about the ongoing situation at Church Hill. Residents quite reasonably want to know what is being done, why it is taking so long, and what can actually be done to get the issue resolved.

I have been campaigning on this issue and have been in regular contact with West Sussex County Council officers and the Cabinet Member for Highways. My focus has been on getting clear answers, challenging assumptions where necessary and, importantly, trying to identify what practical options are available to move this forward.

There are genuine legal complications. The embankments contributing to the safety concerns are privately owned, which places significant limitations on what WSCC can lawfully do. Legal challenges have also significantly contributed to the delays.

But legal complications must not become an excuse for inaction

I will continue to press WSCC on what action is possible and what other avenues can be explored to find a resolution.

One issue residents have raised repeatedly with me is the lack of regular information. I have pushed for that to change, and WSCC has agreed to provide me with regular updates that I can share with residents — including when there is no significant change.

The latest position is that WSCC is continuing to explore the available options for addressing the issues associated with the privately owned embankments. They remain committed to working constructively with the landowners wherever possible, with the aim of progressing towards a long-term resolution.

This is not yet the resolution residents want — and I won’t pretend otherwise.

My role is to keep asking the questions, challenge the barriers where appropriate, and keep pushing for practical solutions rather than simply accepting the status quo.
