What should I do if I’m attacked by a dog?  Please note that HDC does not employ dog wardens.  Any dog attacks should be reported immediately to Sussex Police. I’ve found a dog roaming free. Who should I report it to?

If you find a dog roaming free and not being supervised, you can report it to HDC’s approved contractor on 07512 089777 and they will come and collect. This is a 24/7 service, but the dog does need to be contained for them to collect.

You will be asked to provide the following information:

• Your name and contact details
• A description of the dog, for example its type, colour, size, age
• The time and date when you found the dog
• Where you found the dog
• Where the dog should be collected from (provided the dog is contained.)

Sussex SAR For Lost Dogs CIC is a Community Interest Company, using local volunteer ground searchers and drone operators to help find missing / lost animals.

If your pet has gone missing, please provide Sussex SAR with the following details.

• Name of pet.
• Breed of pet.
• Age of pet
• Any health issues your pet may have.
• Any details regarding collar, harness
• Microchipped yes, or no.
• Home address.
• Missing from location.
• Time of disappearance
• A photograph if possible.
• A contact telephone number.

Once they have received your request for assistance, one of the Control Room team will be in contact.

Claiming back a stray dog

Once a dog has been impounded as a stray at the kennels used by the Council, by law an owner has to pay the release fee before the dog is returned. Once you have identified your dog, payment can then be made at the Council offices or at the kennels. On payment of the fee, the dog will then be released to you. Please note, if your dog is kept in the kennels overnight this will be charged as an additional day fee.

How often do dog bins get emptied?

Horsham District Council does not publish a fixed schedule for dog waste bin emptying. Instead, bins are emptied regularly as part of routine street‑cleaning rounds, with additional visits made as soon as possible when a full bin is reported.

What to do if a dog waste bin is full

If you come across a full or overflowing dog waste bin, you should report it directly to Horsham District Council:

• Use the council’s online reporting form for overflowing dog bins.
• Include the bin number, which is printed on the front of the bin, to help the team locate it quickly.
• Who handles it
• Reports go to Horsham District Council’s street cleaning / waste services team, who will arrange for the bin to be emptied promptly.
